I know Apple covers their products and for good reason. Maybe with a lot of hard work I could crack it but it's all my fault. Her mom would not have trusted anyone but Mr. Apple. I realize there are ways to get the password off an iTunes backup but that's what I'm floundering with. I've activated the sync program and erased all the data on her phone however I only have access to the phone itself. Any advise is appreciated.
You realize iTunes protects the backup then right? It may be worth it to buy a new phone. Or if it's a newer iPhone, a new backup on iTunes. The backup is encrypted, so new devices will be encrypted as well. Try starting over and don't click on restore to iTunes. (I believe the only option right now is "copy over existing backup".) If you follow that process, you should be able to recover the info if you have a current backup.
Zipping is just too risky. I would just opt for files that can be more easily retrieved. Instead of 150 GB of photos, take a look at your settings and see what you can make them to be retained in a small place (I tried that with some Music and documents. But this was not the best) and then, if you do need the 150 GB again, uncomment the folder you just made.
The "backup" folder on the phone, there is also a "full backup.zip" file, also decrypted. I plugged it in my desktop, and it also aes-encrypts the files. If I can remember the password, I can decrypt this archive. The answers are all there, AES 256, 128, all of them. d2c66b5586
