We posed the question to find out what makes for the best tournament director and Tim was quick to answer. The first thing is to have a passion for the game. Everybody loves baseball, but we are not sure how many love it enough to keep up with it year after year. Baseball is a year-round sport; the game is played in the winter, spring, summer and fall. The tournament director must be able to dig into the season, break down the schedule, the ups and downs of the game, and know how their teams are playing so they can make the best decisions for the tournament. There are plenty of schedules to flip through and tons of statistics out there. In many cases the tournament director has very little involvement with the teams they are leading, so they need to really think about the logistics and keep their eyes and ears open for any problems. If your venue has an administrative assistant, its not a bad idea to ask for advice. Pre-tournament meeting calls are a great way to ask questions and gather intel on the tournament. In addition, there is an expense report section of the website for most tournaments and it is here where the DSP assistant coordinators and tournament director complete it and share it with the UMAC.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, DSP selects their tournament directors based on a grace period, not on how well they do at the task of tournament leading. When the tournament directors have a job sometimes as much as 50% of their time is taken up by scheduling and prepping for a tournament. This takes many hours of dedication, but in the end the tournament directors are rewarded with compensation. d2c66b5586
